DIRFloortime® is a strengths-based, evidence-based model for human social emotional development. In the practice of Floortime®, we believe that when we understand a person's Developmental Capacity (D) and their unique Individual Differences (I), we can use a strong Relationships-based (R) approach to reaching your fullest potential across the lifespan. A Floortime® practitioner views a person wholistically, looking at all the sensory, motor, language, developmental, social, and cultural aspects of a person's life to support their ongoing growth towards their social emotional goals. In DIRFloortime®, we use affect, or the sincere expression of our emotional responses, to support initiation, motivation, connection, and building skills or relationships. This approach is based in decades of science learning how people grow and develop, learn language, social interactions, and developmental capacities. NO!!! The DIRFloortime® model is based in the science of human development. This includes social, emotional, motor, and language development. Floortime® interventions are appropriate for any child or adult who is finding difficulty in any daily routine, motor skills, executive functioning skills or social relationships.

Floortime® is based in using relationships and connection to help a person grow! This is a joyful and respectful intervention approach to social emotional growth where individual differences are celebrated and people are supported without judgement or control. In Floortime®, we use ourselves and a person's natural preferred interests to grow connections, engagement, social reciprocity, pretend play, logical thinking, perspective taking, grey area thinking and a reflective capacity. Research around relationships is very strong. Our earliest relationships support the basis of all future learning! Making strong relational connections with others creates meaning in every day interactions and it encourages continued desire to STAY connected. Relationships are the building blocks of emotional and sensory regulation, symbolic thinking, language and communication, cooperation, empathy, and even motor skill development! Being in a safe, trusted relationship allows a person to try new, challenging things and can help to heal from traumatic experiences.

The DIRFloortime® model is based on the science of social emotional development across the entire lifespan. DIR-Expert level trainers are equipped to address challenges from very young children through older adulthood. The DIRFloortime® approach is appropriate for autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent adults who are looking for support in better understanding their own individual differences, their tendencies in the developmental capacities, how these interact and impact their relationships.
